Beach Brawl in San Diego's Pacific Beach
The SDPD says it started with the beating of one man on
a San Diego beach and mushroomed into an
alcohol-fueled brawl that took tear gas and riot police to
break up.
Authorities say lifeguards were treating a man who had
been punched and kicked, when people pointed out a
group of men they believed were behind the attack. Soon
after, a new fight broke out in revenge.
Police were called and started handing out citations.
Hecklers responded by lobbing bottles and sand at
officers. The lifeguards ran from their towers to waiting
rescue boats as the throngs of unruly beach-goers grew
to an estimated 500 people.
Eventually riot police were called in. They formed a
skirmish line along the boardwalk to disperse the crowd.
The crowd then became more agitated at the sight of the
riot clad police.
Bottles were thrown in the direction of the police. Fifteen
people face charges in the Labor Day brawl.
One police officer twisted his ankle and one man arrested
suffered dog bites and a broken wrist.
