La Jolla Shores is a beach in La Jolla, California, located at the foot of
the residential area of the same name.
The beach is approximately one mile long and stretches from the sea
cliffs just north of La Jolla Cove to Black's Beach under Torrey Pines
State Park. Shores meets the Scripps Institute of Oceanography
campus and Kellogg Park, encompasses the Scripps Pier and borders
the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve to the south. The
beach is a popular launch point for kayakers as it is one of the only
beach boat launches in the La Jolla area.
The beach at La Jolla Shores is located in a neighborhood of houses
and condos. Most of the neighbors are older than at the other beach
communities. The main reason for the age discrepancy is the high
cost of housing in La Jolla.
The crowd at the beach is mostly families. Alcohol is prohibited on the
beach. There is a park right next to the beach for picnics or
barbecues.
The beach is very popular with runners because La Jolla Shores has
some of the hardest packed sand. Mornings and late evenings are
the best time to run on the beach because of the cool temperatures.
