The San Diego region has been studied to determine what drives
the business and civic entrepreneurs who are building one of the
most diversified and innovative regional economies in the country.
What do we know? We know that San Diego's leaders made a
commitment in the 1980s to diversify the economy and
encourage the growth of technology companies. They were
motivated by the desire to move away from the boom or bust
cycles that dependency on narrow core industries had created.

today's technology environment, finding more and more

Constant sunshine, the serenity of the Pacific Ocean, and the
ability to move from beach to mountains to desert within a few
hours provides ample inspiration for the thousands of scientists,
engineers and researchers who call San Diego home.
They surf in the early morning and conduct "board" meetings at
the beach. They run in elite racing events and hike the desert
trails in Borrego. They enjoy the seasons in the mountainside
town of Julian. (It's hard to believe there can be snow in the pine
trees in Southern California.) They sail under the Coronado
Bridge and see the distinctive skyline of San Diego's downtown,

support the technology community.

from urban chic to rural peace. There are few areas that offer as
many possibilities within a reasonable distance of major
employment centers.
